‘Mortals confuse me.

They spend their whole lives fearing death, when they accept the life they’ve been given. Simply accept it—they do not lead their own.

Now tell me, how is that different from death?’

—Kingdom of the Dead, Volume II, 190

by Phylis Petra, House Opal

I looked at the diamond, a prisoner inside the flower made out of white gold that Shade had designed for me. I looked at it and I tried to understand why it had given me magic instead of unleashing it out there the way a godstone ought to do.

No luck yet, but I was calm. It had been half an hour since we returned to the tent. I had a steaming coffee in my hand, the diamond in the other, but my mind wouldn’t let me focus on anyone else. The others were watching the video that Jack brought us on his tablet again—of me, fighting the demons, moving like I was a damn ninja, pulling out that godlight from my chest like it was the easiest thing in the world to do.

And that’s just it—it had been. So fucking easy I was still perplexed by it. My body knew exactly what to do with magic. It knew how it worked without my even needing to think it through.

“I swear, it was like watching a damn movie. I was itching to spill its blood, but I had to stand back and watch you,” Ivy was saying, grinning ear to ear. “Totally worth it.”

“What about the inside? What was that like?” Lilith asked. “And how did you pull out three of those lights from your chest like that? Why three? What happened down there?”

“I…I don’t know,” I answered, sipping the coffee, hoping the taste of it would bring me some more clarity. That the smell of it would take away that scent of sulphur that was still sticking to my nostrils.

Again, no luck.

“Was it intentional?” Shade asked, while the others played the video from the beginning again.

“I…I’m not sure. It kind of feels like it, but then the response of my magic was very instinctive. At first, I pulled the magic out of the diamond and inside of me, then let it out—which isn’t how it works, is it?”

Shade shook his head, his brows narrowed, some of his hair falling on his forehead. I liked the way it looked on him. “No, it isn’t.”

“At first, it came out of me like that on its own. I didn’t even think about it, but then after, I separated it into the smaller lights intentionally. And it worked.”

The others had stopped talking and were listening to me, too.

“That’s wicked cool,” Cyth admitted in a whisper.

“You’re still figuring it out. It’s pretty normal not to know how it works yet. That’s why you’re doing this,” Shade said.

Yes, it was. “I want to do it again tomorrow.”

“Cool. Our shift starts tomorrow. We can stay here all day,” said Ivy. “Oreo can keep me company.”

Oreo, who was sitting on my other side, only looked at her like she was bored.
